Rooted in the Special Operations background, our Scholars exemplify unwavering commitment, relentless determination, and a spirit of excellence. Their diverse experiences and dedicated mindset empower them to thrive in the pursuit of their dreams and bring positive change to the field of medicine. We're proud to support their transformation into future leaders of healthcare.

Javis Berlin
Born and raised in Southwest Missouri, Javis began his career in military service after completing his undergraduate studies as a Ranger. Throughout his time in uniform, he worked in roles that supported operational readiness and the integration of advanced technologies. A committed lifelong learner, Javis earned his master’s degree while serving and is now pursuing his next goal, medical school.

Charles "CJ" Edrington
CJ is an active-duty Army officer preparing to transition to medical school in 2027. With a career rooted in leadership and service, he is committed to pursuing a medical specialty in either emergency medicine or primary care—fields where he can have an immediate and meaningful impact.

Christopher Freeman
Chris was born and raised in Connecticut and currently serves on active duty as a senior medical sergeant within Army special operations. He began his military career in the Army Reserve after high school before transitioning to active duty to further develop his skills in advanced military medicine. He earned his bachelor’s degree from American Military University and plans to pursue a career as a surgeon.

Justin Gregory
Justin is a U.S. Navy service member with 15 years of experience, where he developed a strong foundation in leadership, adaptability, and teamwork. His experiences in high-pressure environments shaped a deep respect for the power of medicine to restore and protect life. Following the completion of his MBA at Rice University, Justin is now pursuing his passion for medicine, continuing his lifelong commitment to service in a new and meaningful way.

Brennen Leischner
Born and raised in Idaho, Brennen Leischner began his military career as an enlisted soldier and later advanced into a specialized role within Army special operations. Throughout his service, he developed a strong interest in human performance, injury recovery, and rehabilitation—experiences that shaped his desire to pursue a medical career. Brennen is now preparing to transition from military service to medicine through the SOF to SOM Scholar Program, continuing his lifelong commitment to serving others.

Hunter Spano
Hunter is a former Army Ranger preparing to begin medical school in 2027, with a strong interest in global health. After completing his military service and earning his degree from The University of Texas at Austin, he moved to the southern border region, where he now works as a paramedic supporting national search-and-rescue operations.

Joseph Spears
Joseph Spears is an active-duty Army Special Operations senior medical sergeant preparing to retire in September 2026 after a 20-year career. He has spent more than a decade in advanced military medical roles and has also served as an instructor within the Department of Defense’s premier medical training programs. After earning his bachelor’s degree in clinical health sciences from George Washington University, Joseph committed to pursuing a career in medicine following his retirement from active duty.

Justin White
Justin White is a former U.S. Air Force Pararescueman from Central California, where he developed a passion for medicine through years of experience in combat rescue and special operations. He is completing his premedical studies at the University of New Mexico and plans to pursue a path in surgery or emergency medicine, guided by a lifelong commitment to service and patient care. Outside of academics, Justin enjoys skydiving, playing piano, and spending time with his family.

Peter Drumgoole
Peter Drumgoole began his military service in 2008 and later advanced into a specialized medical role within Army special operations. His experience providing care to teammates, partner forces, and civilians during deployments across multiple regions shaped his deep commitment to medicine and service. As a SOF to SOM Scholar, Peter is channeling these experiences into a medical career focused on patient care, leadership, and readiness. He holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University, graduating magna cum laude.
